A well prepared press release optimized for the search engines can be a valuable tool in establishing your company as an industry authority, building inbound links to your website and directly reaching customers.
But, writing the press release is only half the battle – it has to be distributed in the right places for it to have positive impact. Of course, the first place to have your press release is in an optimized press room on your site so visitors can be in the loop on happenings at your company.
But to reach a wider audience, choose press release distribution outlets with maximum reach
Not all press release outlets are the same, as outlined in the second half of our prior article on optimizing a press release for the search engines. Outlets that yield the best rankings - whether paid or free - allow you to use text/anchor links, specify keywords, optimize meta tags, contain relevant industry targets and feed it to big news outlets like Google News, Yahoo News and MSNBC to name a few.
Press releases optimized with targeted keywords and posted in PR distribution services that include the above criteria can appear in page 1 of Google’s rankings within 24 hours.
PR distribution occurs in two different ways – news/wire services or industry specific
PR distribution can be done a couple of different ways – some are more like true newswire services, distributing your press release to all media outlets in a specified area. Marketwire is a popular wire service where users specify a city, state, region or entire country to distribute their press release.
For example, Marketwire can distribute a press release to all news outlets in Florida for $145 or the entire southeastern U.S. for $270 – and they optimize the press release for search engines for an additional fee of $75. Businesswire is another example – distributing to media outlets and business writers but also some industry specific outlets as well.
Other PR distribution services only target specific industries – some have many industry options while some services only distribute say technology related press releases. PRWeb.com is one such example that has different levels of distribution that are categorized by the number of specific industry outlets you want your press release to go to.
One other industry specific press release distribution service, PR Newswire, includes many industry specific distribution options such as: Auto/transportation, banking & financial services, energy, environment, general business news options and more.
